How much accommodation costs?

Published by:  ChenW

Hi! I’m a student from China coming to study in Germany. I don’t know how much money I’ll need for rent and living, so can you help me? I read somewhere it’s not very expensive, but I’m a student and don’t have job, so I’m worried. How much accommodation costs and where I can find a apartment?

Hi, Chen. Great choice! I have a friend from Spain studying in Düsseldorf, so I will tell you what I know – living expenses including rent are usually around 800 euro a month which I would say is standard for germany anyway. The cheapest option is living in the student dormitories which is about 300 euro a month, and if you dont find a place there, you can share an apartment with other people for about 350 a month – that’s what my friend is doing. Good luck!

Yes, as Lisa said, living expenses are usually 800-900€ but it depends on where exactly you live. You said you don’t have a job, so I recommend the student halls because they are the most cheap. Also, you can save money on food by buying it and cooking it instead of getting takeaway or going to restaurants. There are student discounts and cards for public transports including trains, so that;s another tip.

Great points. I can add that the prices are accurate, because I live in Düsseldorf, but it’s a great idea to have some savings especially because you may need to oay a deposit and a month rent in advance before moving in.
