I found an apartment I like, but the landlord doesn’t want to give it to me. What do I do?

Hello, forum! I have a big problem, so I would appreciate some advice. I was looking for an apartment in Cologne for 3 months and I finally found one I like. It’s a good location and the price is not too bad. I talked to the landlord and he wanted to know my plans. The thing is, I’m not sure if I’m going on Erasmus next year or not, so now he doesn’t want to give it to me in case I do go for a semester abroad. Do you know if I can convince him or should I give up and continue looking even if it might be another 3 months? Thanks!!

I had the same problem last year!! In the end I couldn’t convince my landlord and he gave the apartment to another student. So annoying.

finding a good apartment is so hard. I think you should try to convince him. Why dont you say that if you go on a semester abroad you will find another student to live there during that time? Maybe that will help.

I had a similar problem but I already lived in the apartment. My landlord wanted me to move out when I went on erasmus and give the apartment to someone else. In the end I found a girl who moved there while I was in Hungary and then when I came back she became my roommate.

Do you know if there is erasmus now in the pandemic? Isnt it harder to plan?

thanks for the advise!! The situation sorted itself – they told me I cant go on a semester abroad because of coronavirus so the landlord gave me the apartment.
