I lost my job and I can’t afford my apartment now. Can I negotiate the rent?

Published by:  SandraB

I live in a really comfy apartment and I really like it because it’s close to university and the center. It’s not very cheap, but because I had a job I could pay it. But now because of the pandemic, I lost my job and I can’t pay my rent anymore. I still have some savings, so if the landlady lowers the rent, I will be able to pay it. But I’m not sure how to ask. Do you think she will agree to negotiate the rent?

hi sandra! In my opinion you should definitely try to convince your landlady. If she is not sure, try to tell her that during the pandemic, more students are moving back home becayse of online classes and she wont find someone else to rent the apartment.

Why don’t you just go back home if you lost your job and we’re in a pandemic? You will savbe a lot of money ghat way.

Have you considered finding a roommate? Maybe suggest that to your landlady and if she agrees, you don’t have to lower the rent because you will have someone else to share it with.

I agree with Irene! Its always a god idea to negotiate and if she doesn’t want to lower the rent, then you can think about what to do next. But first ask ^^
