First job

Published by:  DanielC

Could you guys please help me out with any suggestions about a good first job? I have just started my Bachelors at the ETH Zurich, which is great but the costs of living here are waaaay too high. I will definitely need a part-time job if I want some financial independence from my parents :D I checked the newspaper the other day but nothing interesting there. Could you also recommend some websites or agencies that can help me find a decent job?

Ive been living in Geneva for about two years now and I can tell you for sure that it costs a fortune to live here :D Before looking for a job do you know what the legal requirements are?

I was told that I might need a work permit but I haven’t researched much really…

Yeah, depending on your nationality you might need to issue one. Here is a link where you can check the requirements and how much hours you can do per week based on your nationality. https://www.studyinswitzerland.plus/app/uploads/2018/12/20181206-Overview-Work-permit-regulation-Switzerland.pdf

In my first year I worked as a waitress during the semester and the break. I was entitled to 15 hours so although my salary wasn’t really enough the tips were pretty generous, which helped me make ends meet during the semester :D So you can try that or work as a bartender.

You should work in hospitality. Here on this website there is a career section you can check for offers there.

I worked at the university library in my second year and I must say I liked it bery much… I mean it definitely saved me traveling expenses from going to work after lectures as it was literally on the second floor of the campus so… :D I think working on campus is a good option if you wanna save some extra money from transport.

You should work in retail… they pay good money and you get discounts. As a guy mabe you can try out something at Foot Locker, Nike, Addidas or something like that.
