Working more than the allowed hours

Published by:  RashidK

Hey guys! I am an international student from India and I was hoping to find a part-time job while studying in Siegen. I was told that I can work only 20 hours per week but unfortunately this is not enough for me. Is it possible to work more than the allowed hours? If so do I need to obtain a specific permission for this or could I just ask my employer to increase my working hours.

Hey Rashid. Yes, that’s true. Usually international students are allowed only for up to 20 hours pers week for 120 full days (240 half days) per year. But you can still find a full-time job during vacations and save up some money for the upcoming year if that helps.

I had a similar problem last year and I must say that it also depends on the city you are studying in. If it has a high unemployment rate you might be able to ask for more working hours. The best thing to do is speak with the career or international office at your uni for more info. You can also contact the Federal Employment Agency, which in German is Agentur für Arbeit. I hope this helps.

If you work exceed the working hours allowed they will ask you to pay into the social security system. I would also recommend that you go and speak with the job center at your uni for more up to date information and advise.
