Good documentary movies about racism

Published by:  SarahS

I have a task at uni to conduct a research study on documentary of our choice. Considering what is going on around the world in the past months with the BLM movement and protests I decided to focus on racism. If anyone has seen a good documentary movie about racism please share it here along with your thoughts on the movie.

What forms of racism are you going to focus on?

I haven’t though this trough yet tbh… I was kinda hoping to watch several movies first and then decide how I will develop this research. I am happy to hear any suggestions.

Well, as a person of color myself I would suggest that you focus on the most common things like racial discrimination at schools, workplace or even online, because you know there are lots of examples and this subject always needs to be brough to people’s attention, at least in my opinion. But maybe you can also try to look at less widespread cases or racism…

I think one of the most popular docu series is The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross… you can also watch it on YouTube, I think all of the episodes or at least most of them areuploaded there. It is quite good as it focus on five centuries of black history so you wil definitely get a lot of insight from there.

I recommend 13th, you can find it on Netflix and YouTube. It was a bit hard to watch for me personally but I think it could be useful in your case as it is again raising the question of racial inequality through incarceration. It is raising a very good point about the connection between slavery and being a prisoner.

Not really documentaries but I’d say Get Out, Blackkklansman, 12 Years a Slave, and of course Malcolm X.

Thank you all very much about these suggestions, I will check them out. However, I was wondering if anyone can suggest any documentaries focusing on racism on a global scale and not only within America?
