Road trip in Germany

Published by:  CarlaT

Me and my roommate decided to go on a road trip across Germany and maybe even to Austria as our starting point is Munich. Can anyone help me plan this trip as it is our first year here in Germany and we are not really familiar with the place? We also wanted to visit at least three major cities but not sure which one yet. Id appreciate any suggestions.

If your starting point is Munich and you want to visit the major cities I suggest you take a round trip to Germany and visit all of the iconic cities. You can start either with Stuttgart or Nuremberg and go all the way around visitn Cologne, Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Bielefeld, Hanover and Frankfurt. It is a bit long so you might need few weeks to visit everything but it is worth it. You will see som really nice places with famous landmarks, castles and stunning nature. An advice from me , if you choose to use the autobans be careful of the speed limits and always look out for the signs.

I would suggest that you rent a car instead of taking a tour bus because that way you will have the chance to discover more of Germany’s beauty. If your starting point is Munich I suggest that you head north to Würzburg. That way you can cross Germany’s Romantic Road, which is quite popular among tourists. If you want to see major cities from Würzburg you can either go to Frankfurt and from there continue to Bonn, Cologne, etc. or head to Nuremberg and then proceed to Austria, which is like about 6 hours with a car. Here is a link for more info on the Romantic road https://www.romanticroadgermany.com/

TobiasC: I personally think you should choose one or the other, either go to Austria or stik to the major cities or road trip elsewhere in Germany. If you wanna do both it will take much longer since most of the major cities are located far away from the border with Austria. Last year we did a road trip across the Bavarian Alps and we used thi website for planning our trip. https://www.autoeurope.com/road-trip-planner/germany/ We loved it… very convenient, you have everything there: car rentals, trip distance and duration, suggestions what you should visit and also a map.
