The Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, founded in 1854, is a public institution of higher education seated in Karlsruhe, Baden-Wuerttemberg. It runs a branch office in Freiburg. The Academy is considered one of the major art schools in Germany. Almost 300 students receive an artistic education at the Academy. Prospective students can choose between three study courses: the Diploma study course “Fine Arts: Painting/Graphics and Sculpture“, the teacher training program “Art Education at Gymnasium level“, and the Bachelor course “Bachelor of Fine Arts: Art Teaching in the Visual Arts“. Projected to start in 2018 is the Master study course “Master of Education: Art Teaching in the Visual Arts“. The training of students of Fine Arts and students seeking to become art teachers takes place in the same class groups, and is complemented by studies in art theory and art history as well as by workshop activities. A fundamental prerequisite to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe is the completion of an admission examination.
