The University of Bielefeld, founded in 1969, is a public university seated in Bielefeld, North-Rhine Westphalia. It is considered to be both the largest research facility in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region and one of the most renowned medium-sized universities worldwide. More than 24,000 students are enrolled in round about 115 study programs in the fields of humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and engineering. The University accomodates 13 faculties: the faculty of biology, the faculty of chemistry, the faculty of educational science, the faculty of history and philosophy and theology, the faculty of health science, the faculty of linguistics and literary studies, the faculty of mathematics, the faculty of physics, the faculty of psychology and sports science, the faculty of law, the faculty of sociology, the faculty of business administration and economics, and the faculty of technology. As a university combining almost all faculties under one roof, the University of Bielefeld is also known by the name “university of short distances“.
