Central European University (CEU) is a private research university with campuses in Vienna and Budapest. Its degrees are accredited in Austria, Hungary, and the United States and well-known for their strength in the social sciences and humanities, low student-faculty ratio, and international student body. The main aim of the institution is to provide in-depth educational programs, combining research aspects from American universities and the traditional approach from Central European universities. The language of instruction at Central European University is English. It is dedicated to the opening of societies and democracy, through advanced research, and research-based teaching.
Established in 1991, the university currently accommodates around 1,300 students, 700 postgraduates and 400 doctoral students. CEU is composed of 14 academic departments and 17 research centers, in addition to the School of Public Policy and the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations. The university has expanded from a regional to a global educational institution, with students from over 110 countries. Continuous exchange of perspectives, cross-cultural communication, promotion of equality policies, real-world experience and global perspectives are key ideals of the university’s approach.
In the 2020-2021 academic year, two new bachelor's degree programs were introduced, building the university’s own history of academic and policy achievements in transforming the closed communist inheritance. In the 2021 QS World University Rankings, CEU is ranked 25th worldwide in the field of politics and international studies, 14th worldwide for academic reputation in the same subject, 35th worldwide for philosophy, and 66th worldwide for sociology. CEU's Business Analytics Program is ranked as the 16th best in Europe by the QS Masters in Business Analytics Rankings 2019.
All CEU programs are registered with the New York State Education Department and held to the New York State Learning Standards. CEU is also recognized as a private higher education institution and accredited by the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria.
