Description
The demographic development of the population forces physiotherapists to prepare for changing requirements in the professional field. The increase in chronic diseases requires therapists to provide patient-oriented support in dealing with illnesses and disabilities.
The DIU offers physiotherapists the opportunity to study parallel to their training or profession. Complementary to the vocational school education, the study programme expands existing physiotherapeutic skills with theoretical-scientific knowledge as well as health-scientific and economic background knowledge.
Structure of the study programme
The programme is structured in modules. The modules teach the basics (e.g. basic sciences, methodological competence) and subject-specific content (e.g. related sciences, subject-specific topics). The programme enables students to implement current scientific findings as reflective practitioners. Furthermore, students gain insight into the structure and function of the health care system. They learn how the health system, inpatient and outpatient clinics and rehabilitation facilities are organised and how cost units work. In addition, the legal framework conditions for working in the health care system are taught.
Social skills are also part of mastering the work tasks of a physiotherapist. The students are prepared to optimise their time and self-management as well as to manage staff themselves. They deepen their communication skills and practise leading patient/client and staff discussions. In addition, they learn how to resolve conflicts.
