The Folkwang University of the Arts, founded in 1927, is a public art school in North Rhine-Westphalia with locations in Esssen, Bochum, Dortmund, and Duisburg. Being one of three integrated art schools in Germany, it combines several diciplines and art forms under one roof, namely music, theatre, design, dance, and science. In these fields, the Folkwang University offers 21 undergraduate Bachelor degree courses and 25 postgraduate Master degree courses. Added to this are the continuing education certificate program “Gegorian Chant“, and the “Concert Study Course of Excellence“. Doctoral and postdoctoral qualifications can be gained in musicology, music pegagogy, art sciences, design sciences, theory and history of photography, and ergonomics. The Folkwang University is organized in four faculties: Faculty 1: Instrumental training, Jazz, Composition, Professional Performance, Orchestral Playing, Faculty 2: Music Teaching, Music Pedagogy, Musicology, Integrative Music Theory, Vocal Ensemble Direction, Music of the Middle Ages; Faculty 3: Voice/Music Theatre, Voice Performance, Musical, Physical Theatre, Acting, Directing, Dance, Dance Composition, Dance Pedagogy; Faculty 4: Photography, Industrial Design, Communication Design, Art and Design Science, and the Folkwang Graduate Programme Design Heterotopia. Depending on the individual program, students receive a B.A., B.Mus., Artist Diploma, M.A., M.Mus., and M.Ed. The Folkwang University of the Arts accomodates round about 1,600 students.
