Description
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that integrates aspects of biology, computer science and mathematics. Its main function is to interpret and analyze biological data. Bioinformatics have an important role in helping detect disease susceptibility genes and developing suitable treatments, analyzing gene and protein expression and converting complex data into useful information. Bioinformatics address contemporary issues and work towards solving them using computer science. Bioinformatics programs cover a wide array of subjects, typically including Genomics, Numerical Mathematics, Statistics, Biodiversity and Evolution, Physiology, Bioinformatics of Biological Sequences, Analysis of Cellular Networks, Quantitative Genetics, Image Processing and Phenotyping in Bioinformatics, Technology in Molecular Biology and more. Bioinformatics programs are usually focused on research, encouraging students to independently analyze problems and develop solutions, adapt to the growing amounts of data and new technologies, and critically discuss and debate topics in the field. Career prospects for Bioinformatics graduates are various. Work opportunities may arise in sectors like biotechnology, pharmacy, biology, research, engineering, neurobiology, biomedicine, teaching and education, bioimaging, data processing, environmental science, programming and others.
