The doctorate program in Protestant Theology is suitable for candidates who have completed the Master degree in Protestant theology excellently. They can begin the doctorate program in the Free Theological University of Giessen, but the university does not have the authority to confer doctorates. Due to this fact, the program is a ``cooperative doctorate`` with a partner university which has the authority to issue doctorates. The Free Theological University of Giessen collaborates with the Evangelical Theological Faculteit in Leuven, Belgium, and the Theological University in Kampen. Two certified professors from the FTH and the cooperating university accompany the doctorate students through the program. After it is completed successfully, theological doctorate is awarded by TU Kampen or ETF Leuven. Cooperative doctoral programs allow institutions that do not have the legal authority to confer doctorates to participate in university doctoral programs.
