An opportunity exists at the HTW Saar to do a two-semester “Participation Specialist” course. The group it has been designed for are people employed in in the educational sector – social workers, pedagogues, students or educators. It was devised to familiarize them with the ways of implementing and complying with the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, paired with the German federal Child Protection Act. These require, apart from recognition of children’s human rights like equality, respect, protection and dignity, the right of participation, which means children are also given the opportunity to express their concerns, complaints, and criticism. Day-care centers have to be aware of how this regulation is employed in their everyday tasks. The learning blocks occupy altogether 15 days, some of the seminars are done face-to-face, others – online. If, apart from the teaching hours taken, participants dedicate another 24 to a thesis or project development, and take an exam, they will be given 5ECTS and will receive the “Specialist for Participation” certificate.
