Musical Composition, or just Composition, is the process of creating original musical pieces. Nowadays there is a variety of techniques and means of composing music, mainly due to the advance in technology and digitalization. Students can specialize in acoustic, classical, modern, electronic, electroacoustic and computer-aided composition. Subjects taught in Composition programs include Orchestration, Computer Application to Music, Tonal Analysis, Bibliography & Library Resources, Musical Cultures, Sound Systems, Contemporary Techniques, Electronic Music and more. Both theoretical and practical classes are incorporated in Composition programs, because a hands-on experience helps students develop professionally. Students learn how to analyze music, use computer programs to create pieces, collaborate on projects and work in teams, perform on stage, build a strong portfolio, explore different genres of music, build a personal style, and develop their compositional skills. Graduates are expected to have a wide range of skills and knowledge. Career opportunities include instrumental composer, sonic artists, music composer for video games, television, radio or film, theater composer, sound designer, teacher, freelance composer, conductor, analyzer and many others.
