Description
The study program “Master of Arts in Oriental Islamic Studies” offered at Ruhr University Bochum provides a full-time combined master course with a duration of four semesters. This program is targeted towards prospective students who wish to seek employment in political or cultural institutions where academic knowledge of Islamic Philology is required. The interdisciplinary approach of the Master’s program aims at the scientific acquisition of Islamic cultural and political practices and their relation to the globalized Western world. Some of the core modules that participants could major in are namely, “History of Islamic Faith and Religious Practice”, “History of Muslim Countries and Societies”, “Contemporary History of the Near and Middle East”, and “Oriental Literatures”. The program strongly recommends participation in six-month study abroad programs. Preconditions to applying for this program are proof of English language certificate, as well as proficiency in one Arabic language, amounting to at least level A2. Before starting their studies, students must also demonstrate a proficiency certificate in either Latin, Greek or Hebrew.
