RWTH Aachen University, founded in 1870 and seated in Aachen (North Rhine-Westphalia), is the biggest state university in Germany as far as technical studies are concerned. Ever since the University was awarded for its institutional strategy for project-related development of top-level research at the university (“RWTH 2020: Meeting Global Challenges“) within the scope of the 2007 Excellence Initiative, it belongs to the circle of the nine so-called “elite universities“ in Germany. More than 44,000 students, 8,000 being international students from 128 countries, receive an academic education at nine faculties and its corresponding departments/divisions: the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences (Department of Mathematics, Department of Computer Science, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Biology), the Faculty of Architecture, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Georesources and Materials Engineering (Division of Mineral Resources and Raw Materials Engineering, Division of Materials Science and Engineering, Division of Earth Sciences and Geography), the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, Social Sciences; Education, Cognition, Communication), the Faculty of Business and Economics, and the Faculty of Medicine. Among the more than 100 study programs offered are also 14 English-language degree courses. Moreover, with more than 9,000 employees, the RWTH Aachen University is the biggest employer of the greater Aachen region.
