Description
China is the most populous country in the world and a nation famous for its ancient traditions, rich culture and fascinating history. Sinology, or Chinese Studies, is the academic study of Chinese language, literature, philosophy, customs and politics both in the past and in the present. A degree course in Sinology is multidisciplinary, but it generally involves studying subjects like Modern and Classical Chinese, Classical Chinese Texts, Art and Archaeology of the Silk Road, Chinese Business and Economy, Politics and Economy of China, Chinese Society and Culture, East Asian International Relations and more. Students are also presented with the opportunity to explore contemporary issues in Chinese culture, for example topics like Gender, Revolution and Modernity in Chinese Cinema, Hong Kong and Mainland China: Interaction and Integration, Housing and Urban Governance, and Modern Chinese Literature. Research and fieldwork are highly encouraged in Sinology programs, so students can really immerse themselves in the Chinese culture and develop valuable professional skills. Career prospects for Sinology graduates include professional activities in business management, advertizing, academia, politics, diplomacy, journalism and other fields.
