The University of Fine Arts Mainz, founded in 1959 as an academy for painters and sculptors, is a public school of art seated in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate. It has the right to confer doctoral degrees. As an integral part of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, the University of Fine Arts Mainz offers qualification opportunities for artistic work to round about 180 students. On offer are two study programs: the nine-semester Diploma degree program “Fine Arts“, and the teacher training program “Higher Secondary School Teacher Training in Fine Arts“ (M.Ed.). The latter program is said to be as artistically demanding as the former. Students gain their manual and technical skills in several working areas (namely, Wood and Metal Working, Photography and Media, Graphic Reproduction, and Painting Technique) which are trained in several art classes (base class, sculpture class, film class, photography class, painting class, class for media art, drawing class). Moreover, the University of Fine Arts Mainz provides the opportunity for a doctorate in Art Theory and Art Education.
