The University of Kiel offers the degree program “Master of Arts in Romance Philology”, which begins in the winter and summer semester and ends after 4 semesters. Through practical language activities in both languages taught by experienced speakers, this program is designed to introduce students to independent or competent language usage. Also covered in this course are linguistics as well as literature and cultural studies. As part of their studies in linguistics, students do diachronic study on many languages from its origins in Latin to the current day, as well as synchronous analysis of language in real time. This course is still a reading course and demands a willingness and enjoyment to get familiar with a foreign language in speech and writing, as well as to study the most essential works in the original. Students receive 120 credit points and may find work in areas such as media, translation or tourism.
