Bad Hersfeld is a beautiful city located in the north-east part of the Hessian state. Nestled in the Hersfeld valley, this hidden gem is known for its healing mineral springs, which is where it got its name from. A city with a history that can be traced back to the 8th century, Bad Hersfeld is known for ages as an ideal place for living and relaxation. The city’s charisma comes mostly from its historical buildings and ancient monastery ruins that are also believed to be the largest Romanesque church ruins in Europe. Whether a visit of the Old Town framed with picturesque stone houses, food markets, restaurants and bars, a walk down the Kurpark where one can admire beautiful green landscapes, or a day spent at the spa house, Bad Hersfeld always fascinates its citizens and visitors with something. Due to its location in the Herfeld valley, Bad Hersfeld enjoys a warm temperate climate with mild temperatures all year round. Summers here are warm and sunny with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 23°C. In winter temperatures might drop below 0°C with cold and dry weather. Bad Hersfeld has a good transportation network with city buses circulating around all districts of the city. Furthermore, traveling to and from Bad Hersfeld to other parts of the country is also easy and can be done by car, train or bus. Some bigger cities located within a close proximity to Bad Herself are Kassel, Fulda, and Marburg.

STUDYING IN BAD HERSFELD

Bad Hersfeld is home of the private, state-recognized university of applied sciences Hochschule der Deutschen Gesetzlichen Unfallversicherung. The university was founded in 1996 as an educational institution for the commercial professional associations and the public accident insurance institutions with a strong focus in three main areas: rehabilitation, public administration, and social insurance. The university offers dual Bachelor and Master study programs, as well as certificate degrees carried out in cooperation with the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. Around 260 students are currently enrolled, all from different backgrounds and nationalities, thus contributing to the diverse scene of young students who have chosen Bad Hersfeld as a city for their studies. The Bad Hersfeld campus of the university offers ideal conditions not only for learning but also for living. The Wohn campus, situated in a quiet location in the outskirts of the city, provides 126 single rooms for students of the university. Each room is equipped with a bathroom, desk, TV, and free Wi-Fi access. In addition, the campus also offers twelve modernly equipped rooms where students can gather together and discuss different topics related to their university or student life. The campus also offers a wide range of leisure activities that students can enjoy at any time. Whether they want to gather together in one of the common rooms, go to the in-house gym, or play some table tennis, the Wohn campus has it all!

BAD HERSFELD LIFESTYLE

Despite its size, Bad Hersfeld has a very diverse and vibrant atmosphere perfect for young adults. The city is known for its annual festival that takes place from mid-June to early August in the Stiftsruine (monastery ruins), that were built in the 8th century. During the festival musical and theatrical performances are taking place, welcoming more than 1,500 spectators. Apart from the Bad Hersfeld Festival, other events such as local festivals, music concerts, performances, and markets are also taking place all year round, providing a great opportunity for foreigners to indulge into the German culture and get to know more about the local traditions and way of living. In addition to the cultural scene, students can enjoy many other outdoor and indoor activities in their leisure time. After a long day of lectures, one can cool off in one of the local bars and pubs or grab a bite in one of the many restaurants located in the Old Town serving traditional dishes. The city offers plenty of possibilities for every taste and budget. In the warm sunny days, students often gather in the Kurpark where they enjoy the weather with friends, have a picnic or play outdoor games under the sunrays. For a relaxing weekend, one can also visit the Kurbad Therme, a wellness oasis located in the heart of the city.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN BAD HERSFELD

International students coming to Germany for their education can find various work opportunities throughout and after their studies. However, some of them might be subjected to certain rules and requirements based on their nationality. As per general rule students from the European Union enrolled in full-time studies are allowed to work for no more than 20 hours per week while studying. Students from outside the EU are also able to work in the country, namely for 120 full days or 240 half days per year. Bad Hersfeld offers multiple employment opportunities for students in bars, restaurants, shops, or within the university itself.
