Located in the Swiss canton of Basel Stadt, Bettingen is the smallest municipality in the region with a population of only about 1,200 people. The town shares a border with Germany, which is probably the reason behind the “-ingen” part in the name of the municipality, a typical ending for German cities. Once a farming community, Bettingen has developed and grown into a modern residence with a great quality of life. Awarded twice as an “energy city”, Bettingen strives to maintain a balance between its village character and the contemporary innovations in the everyday life. Located in between the wooded hills on the western slope of the Dinkelberg hill range, this place offers some very beautiful scenery spots with unspoiled nature, a perfect getaway for those who want to escape the busy lifestyle of bigger cities. Similar to Riehen, Bettingen has also a mild climate due to its close proximity to the Rhine Valley. There is little amount of rainfall throughout the year and the average annual temperature here is about 9 °C to 10 °C. The months from June through August are characterized by warm weather with long and sunny days. Winter months, on the other hand, are significantly cooler, with January being the coldest month when temperatures are likely to drop below 0 °C. Bettingen is well-connected to other neighbor cities, which allows daily travels to and from bigger cities like Riehen, Basel and even Germany as the city is located right on the northern border of the two countries. A well-developed public transport network within Bettingen also ensures an optimal connection within the town.

STUDYING IN BETTINGEN

Bettingen is home to the Theological Seminary St. Chrischona (TSC), offering theological education with three Bachelor degree courses. Prospective students can choose between “Communicative Theology”, “Theology and Music”, and “Theology and Education” courses, each including practice-oriented training and high-quality studies. Furthermore, the Seminary also offers a distance learning program where students can study “Protestant Theology” where they benefit from full flexibility and still receive a Bachelor’s degree upon successful completion of the course. In addition to the great teaching opportunities, the TSC has also a well-developed research profile that aims to contribute to the overall theological discourse. Future students might face new challenges at the beginning of their student lives. One of the primary things that they will need to think of is undoubtedly where to live at, especially if they are coming from abroad. Students can find rooms in shared flats or entire apartments on the Seminary’s campus. Both come furnished, however the prices might vary depending on the type of the accommodation. A double room, for example, costs about 265 CHF, whereas the apartment’s rent varies between 500 CHF and 1,500 CHF per month. All prices are inclusive of additional costs such as heating, electricity and water.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN BETTINGEN
