BRAUNSCHWEIG AT A GLANCE

Braunschweig is a city that successfully combines modernity and tradition. With its beautiful medieval architecture, the city is filled with monuments that have kept their charm over the decades. Braunschweig has been strongly influenced by the Guelph dynasty which transformed the city into a trading power and an important European political hub. The memory of ruling leaders like Henry the Lion and his son Otto IV lives on through historical landmarks like the bronze lion statue on the Burgplatz square or the Dankwarderode Castle and St. Blasii Cathedral. However, nowadays the city is filled with contrasts coming from the business set ups and large corporations, world-class shopping opportunities and prestigious educational institutes. The transport connections within and outside of the city are excellent, allowing effortless reach of all points of the city. Although Braunschweig is known as the city of short distances, public transport is still active with trams and busses circulating on a regular basis, and students can profit from a so-called semester ticket entitling them to travel for free. However, most of the city center here is a pedestrian zone and everything else around is at very short walking distance perfect for walking or cycling. As a university town, Braunschweig is very attractive to young people coming from other countries, which contributes to the multicultural society established in the city. Over 25,000 people are with foreign citizenship and more and more students and expats come each year to live and study in Braunschweig. The main language spoken there is German, although some do speak English especially young people and around the two universities.
