In the northernmost district in Upper Bavaria lies the city of Eichstätt with a population of nearly 14,000 people. The city is situated on both sides of the Altmühl river and in the heart for the famous Altmühl Valley Nature Reserve, a popular destination for tourists. With over 1,000 years of history, the city’s appearance has not changed much and still carries the noble elegance of lovely colors, baroque houses and churches. Newcomers will be surprised how much there is to be discovered in this relatively unknown Bavarian city, from medieval buildings like the Willibaldsburg castle and the Eichstätt cathedral to modern art galleries showcasing the works of local artists. Another thing that the city is famous for, especially among young adults, is the renowned Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, the largest private university in Germany. The continental climate is predominant here, with mild temperatures during summer months and chilly on winter days. The months between June and August are quite warm and sunny with temperatures varying between 18 °C and 25 °C. Winters, on the other hand, tend to be cold and dry with temperatures dropping below 0 °C. Eichstätt is relatively small in size and thus most of the things are easy to be reached by foot or by bicycle. Even so, the public transport network is also well-developed, and city buses circulate around all parts of Eichstätt. Furthermore, traveling to and from the Bavarian city is quite easy since Eichstätt is integrated into the Deutsche Bahn network providing frequent railway services to other bigger cities such as Ingolstadt, Nuremberg, and Augsburg.

STUDYING IN EICHSTÄTT

Established in 1980, the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU) emerged as a result of a merger between the Episcopal Philosophical-Theological College and the Eichstätt College of Education. Today, the university is considered the first and only Catholic university in German-speaking countries. It currently accommodates 5,330 students, of which 473 are international ones. The KU offers over 40 degree programs in the following eight faculties: Theology, Mathematics and Geography, Philosophy and Education, Business Administration and Economics, Languages and Literatures, Social Work, History and Social Sciences, and Religious Education. The university has also a second campus in the city of Ingolstadt, where the faculty of Business Administration and Economics is located. Although being a Catholic university, all degrees and qualifications obtained from the KU are equivalent to those obtained from any other traditional German university. In addition, the university has also the right to confer doctoral and post-doctoral degrees. Students of all faiths, genders and races are warmly welcomed by the university, where they can receive academic knowledge along with social skills based on Christian values and views on human life. Compared to other bigger cities in Germany, finding accommodation in Eichstätt is relatively easy and quite inexpensive. There are nearly 20 student residence halls in the city where incoming students can find rooms in shared flats or single apartments. Exchange students may use the housing services offered by the university by contacting the International Office on campus. The service is free of charge, however there is a deposit of 350 EUR, which is refundable, for the housing service.

Studying and living in Eichstätt means experiencing a top quality of life with low costs and high living standards. Students can benefit from a variety of leisure and cultural activities offered both by the university and the city itself. The KU has several clubs and groups where young adults interested in arts and sports can join and practice everything from badminton, fencing and jazz dance to playing musical instruments and getting involved in film evenings. There are plenty of things to be done within the city after a long day of lectures. The Old Town Theatre and the Hall of Mirrors are some of the places where various cultural events take place all year round. Whether in winter or summer there are plenty of indoor and outdoor opportunities to practice sports such as swimming, skating, football and many more in the modern sporting facilities. The preparation for the professional life is a crucial aspect in every student’s life and requires a lot of attention. Therefore, the KU encourages its students to always be proactive and engage with various work-related activities. In addition, everyone who feels the need to receive further advice or guidance in relation to the job application process can also refer to the Career Center. To use the services of the latter, students must solely create a profile by signing up via the Career Center website. Some students might face certain financial challenges while studying, especially those coming from a foreign country. Working while studying might be hard to balance for some, which is why in Germany students can work only part-time during their lecture periods and full-time during their semester breaks.
