Erfurt lies in the Thuringian state located in the heart of Germany. With its close proximity to bigger cities like Leipzig, Munich and Frankfurt, one can travel quickly and explore the rest of the country in almost no time. Being located in the Thuringian Basin, the city’s climate can be described as continental with warm but humid summers, and relatively cold winters. The public transport network is fast, comfortable and very reliable, allowing people to travel within Erfurt without hassle. Buses and trams circulate regularly and even late at night connecting the city center with the outer districts in the region. Cycling is also very popular, since people enjoy riding their bikes in high-quality cycling lanes located throughout the city.

STUDYING IN ERFURT

There are two higher education institutes in Erfurt – University of Erfurt and Erfurt University of Applied Sciences. Both universities are devoted to following long established traditions but also keep up to date by introducing new teaching approaches and modern courses. Although focusing on different fields of studies, both institutes cover a vast range of degree courses, including social science, modern languages, architecture, civil engineering and many others. Another benefit to studying in Erfurt is that here students can engage in an interdisciplinary program combining different courses. This method is used by both universities in order to improve the skills and knowledge of their students. The international aspect if very important for both institutes with them being involved in many projects, exchange programs and collaborations with other universities around the world aiming to provide multiple opportunities for their students and tutors. Foreign students who need help and guidance can turn to the International Offices located in either campus. Finding accommodation can be another challenge for newcomers, however luckily there are many opportunities throughout Erfurt and at affordable prices too. Rooms can be rented either in a student residence or via the private market, and it is up to the students to secure themselves a spot before or after they arrive in the city.

ERFURT LIFESTYLE

There are many exciting things to see and do around Erfurt or outside of it in the surrounding region. The city has a very rich history that can be explored within the old town filled with medieval buildings and museums. A walk around this charming place will unveil beautiful green landscapes in the many parks and gardens, more than 100 bridges some of which filled with small shops, traditional bars and restaurants and many other magnificent spots waiting to be discovered. Students who are keen on exploring the region can also travel for free all around Thuringia with their semester tickets. Student organizations host many parties throughout semesters; however students can also attend other parties at the local clubs or enjoy a quiet night out with friends at one of the many cocktail bars around Erfurt. Other popular meeting spots for students are some of the cafes around the downtown or during the warm summer days many tend to go for a picnic in any of the parks or down the Gera riverside. Cultural activities like fairs, movie nights or even modern plays are also available to students and are quite inexpensive too.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN ERFURT

It might be a bit difficult to find a part-time job in Erfurt, however with a good knowledge of German and English temporary job offers are sometimes available around the city. Whether in the university library or somewhere else around the campus or as a typist, bartender or in a call center, students can find a way to financially support themselves throughout their studies. International students might be subject to certain requirements in terms of work permits and must research this information once they arrive in Erfurt. After their graduation students can choose if they wish to work abroad, move somewhere else in Germany or continue with their lives in Erfurt. Degrees obtained by either university will be recognized internationally, however further career opportunities around the city are also available to graduates. The local economy has changed a lot in recent years with the growth of the tourism sector, the agricultural industry and various businesses in the service sector.
