Freising is a city located in Bavaria right on the Isar river and about 30 kilometers away from the state capital, Munich. The city also happens to be one of the oldest settlements in the region, with a history that can be traced back to almost 1,300 years ago. In the early Middle Ages, Freising became an important religious center, which is why nowadays one of the most popular landmarks of the city are the St. Mary and Corbinian Cathedral, and the Diocesan Museum. Along the streets of this university town, one can also discover typical architecture styles like the Rococo and Baroque. The Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences is another important institution in Freising that contributes significantly not only to the number of young adults living in the city but also to the local economy. What makes this city so charming and interesting is the wide range of cultural events keeping up the lively spirit of Freising all year round. The city lies in the middle of a transition climatic zone, which makes the weather here relatively changeable, either too dry or too humid. In summer, temperatures vary between 17 °C and 27 °C, whereas during winter they drop significantly, and large amounts of snow can be quite common due to the close proximity with the Alps. The city is very well-connected to other cities in the region and Munich especially as it is only few kilometers away and easy to reach. In addition, the railway line passing through Freising also grants access to cities like Regensburg, Nuremberg, Passau and Hof. Students can easily explore the surrounding region or other parts of the country by traveling with their semester ticket allowing them to use public transportation for free or at a lower price depending on the destination. Within the city, public transport is serviced by buses that circulate around all parts of Freising. Night buses operating at every hour are available on weekends and during bank holidays.

STUDYING IN FREISING

The Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences is a unique and innovative institute with two locations in Freising and Triesdorf. What distinguishes this institute from all other universities of applied sciences is its focus on green subjects. The majority of the study courses here are oriented towards nature and the environment, which makes this university the second one in the state of Bavaria to tackle the environmental regulations set down by the European Union. Currently, the university is split into two campuses between Weihenstephan, Freising and Triesdorf. Out of the 6,150 students enrolled, some 3,950 are located on the Weihenstephan campus. In total both campuses offer 19 Bachelor and 12 Master degree programs along with an additional 13 work-study courses. All of them are spread across seven departments covering the areas of Agriculture, Bioengineering, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Engineering, Forestry and Horticulture. International applications, too, are accepted by the university. In fact the university is in close cooperation with other higher learning institutes around the globe. Such relations also allow all students to participate in exchange programs and broaden their perception of the world. International students applying for a course of study in the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences will have the chance to also apply for a room in one of the four student residences in Freising. It is recommendable that they start with the process even before they get accepted due to the limited capacity. The rent for a single room in a shared flat varies between 218 and 363 EUR, whereas for studio apartments or family flats prices can reach up to 569 EUR depending on the residence hall. FREISING LIFESTYLE

As a university town Freising’s lifestyle is more or less shaped by the student population. In general, the lifestyle here can be described as calm yet at times quite lively because of the numerous cultural events that are hosted all year round. Everything from art exhibitions to theatrical plays, dance shows or even open-air concerts can be found in the calendar of events of the city. Many venues offer different programs such as comedy shows, live performances or readings ideal for students as most of them are for a small fee.
