FULDA AT A GLANCE
Fulda is a German city in the federal state of Hesse, located right on the Fulda River after which it is named. In its total area of 104,04 km2, there are almost 70,000 people living, studying and working in Fulda. Moreover, approximately seventeen percent of the city’s inhabitants are internationals coming from all around the world, but the majority of them are originally from Austria, Croatia, and Greece. The official language spoken in the city of Fulda is German, however, the majority of the inhabitants do speak at least a basic level of English as well. The climate in the city of Fulda can be defined as warm and temperate with significant rainfall during the whole year. From June until August or even September, the temperatures go up to 23 – 26°C. During January and February, temperatures are between -1 and -3°C, with snowfall in January. All cities in the Federal Republic of Germany have reliable public transportation network and the city of Fulda is definitely no exception. It consists of bus lines and railway. Moreover, the Fulda main train station, also called Fulda Hauptbahnhof in German, is considered a transport hub of both local and long-distance traffic in the country’s railway network. The buses connect all the neighborhoods and suburban areas with the city center while trains connect the city of Fulda with the rest of the country, as well as with some neighboring countries. For example, there are several direct trains leaving from Fulda and traveling to Frankfurt am Main every day. A one-way journey takes less than an hour and costs between 5 and 10 EUR. Semesterticket holders can even travel within the area of their university absolutely for free. There are also direct trains from Fulda to the capital of the Czech Republic – Prague – for approximately 20 EUR one way, and it takes six and a half hours of traveling by train only.

STUDYING IN FULDA
Despite its size, Fulda is a city which can offer an excellent level of higher education. The University of Applied Sciences Fulda has a wide range of degree courses to offer and every year, the institution is attracting more and more students from around the world. In fact, currently the university is home to more than 8,000 students and fourteen percent of them are foreigners. From Engineering, through Business Management to Software Development, there is something for everyone. The higher education institution gives prospective students the chance to choose between short-term and summer programs, full-time programs, exchange semester programs, as well as preparatory courses. After deciding what degree course students want to study, they have to think about the student accommodation options available in the city. In Fulda, students can choose between living in the student halls of residence, also called student dormitories, and going for private accommodation by finding a room to rent in a shared flat. The cheapest option is, however, living in a student dormitory. There are approximately twelve different student dormitories based in the city of Fulda and depending on the type of flat and room, prices can be between 180 and 320 EUR per month, including the bills. Renting a room or a studio outside the student halls can be a little more expensive. Single room in a shared flat close to the city center comes at the price of 390 – 470 EUR per month.

The city of Fulda is a small but beautiful and exciting place with impressive architecture. Moreover, the city does offer amazing opportunities for students to not only study but also to create great memories and enjoy their stay in Fulda as much as possible. Right outside of the university campus is located the Kulturzentrum Kreuz, which happens to be the spot where students meet. The place hosts lots of student parties every Wednesday evening and because the city is not big, after a while, everyone knows everyone. During the weekends, the most famous among students club – Neidclub –becomes the place where all the dance aficionados go. There, students can show everyone what they can do on the dancefloor and still stick to their budget since the club does offer great prices as well.

University of Applied Sciences in Fulda can offer students not only excellent education but also help in taking their very first steps towards their career future. The Career Service at the higher education institution assists students in finding what is the best fit for them in terms of career, to develop the skills needed for it and to find an internship placement or full-time position that best suits their interests. Also, there are numerous companies which are the most common choice for internship placements among local students in Fulda. The Fulda Reifen GmbH, the biggest tire company in the region, has its headquarter in the city. Tegut is the biggest food retailer company in the area and is also based in Fulda. Both companies provide students with the opportunity to benefit from an internship placement with them or even full-time employment after graduating from the university.
