Hamm is a beautiful German city located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In the city’s total area of nearly 230 km2, there are almost 180,000 people living, working and studying in the city. Approximately fifteen percent of the city’s inhabitants are actually foreigners coming from various European countries, mostly from Turkey, Poland, and Bulgaria. The official language spoken in the city of Hamm is German, however, it is common for the young people living in the city to speak English as well. In general, the climate in Hamm can be classified as warm and temperate. The temperatures in the summer, particularly in July and August, go up to 22-23°C. However, even in the summer, nights usually feel cold. In December and January temperatures are between -2 and 4°C with significant rainfall during the whole winter season. The Federal Republic, in general, has a reputation of having reliable, excellent and well-organized public transportation network. The city of Hamm is no exception. The individual neighborhoods in the city, including suburban areas, are connected through bus lines. Moreover, for all Semesterticket holders traveling within the region costs absolutely nothing. Students can travel to other big cities in the country such as Dortmund, Munster or Bochum and it will take between twenty minutes to one hour by train only. Another bonus is that all enrolled students in Germany have some special discounts when it comes to traveling by bus. With companies like Flixbus, students can have a weekend getaway to the Hamburg or Frankfurt am Main in exchange for 15 to 25 EUR for one ticket.

STUDYING IN HAMM
Hamm is a city which can offer not only travel opportunities but an excellent level of higher education, too. Founded in 2009, the Hamm-Lippstadt University, as the name implies, has two campuses – in Hamm and in Lippstadt. The local higher education institution is currently home to more than 2,000 students coming from all around the world. In fact, around ten percent of all enrolled students there are foreigners. The university offers a wide spectrum of degree courses students can choose from, including Biomedical Engineering, Intelligent Systems Design, Sports and Health Care Engineering. Even though the main language of instruction at the university is German, there are numerous degree courses taught in English or both in German and English, too. After deciding what degree course they want to study, applicants have to think about the student accommodation options available in the city. In Hamm, students can choose between living in the student halls of residence, also called student dormitories, and finding private accommodation themselves instead. The cheapest type of student accommodation in Germany is, however, the student dormitory. There are several student dormitories based in the city of Hamm, and depending on the size of the room, prices can vary 190 and 280 EUR per month, including all the bills. Private accommodation is usually more expensive. A single room in a shared flat close to the city center or the university campus comes at the price of 300 – 380 EUR per month. Studios and one-bedroom apartments in Hamm cost between 450 and 600 EUR per month, depending on the location and the size of the flat.

The city of Hamm does offer top-level higher education. However, outside of the university lectures, tutorials and exams, there are so many other things students can do in their spare time while living in Hamm. The city is green and is ideal for long walks. Maximilianpark, for example, is the best place students can go every time they need to spend just a few hours in a quiet and beautiful space, relaxing and enjoying the gorgeous lake situated in the middle of the park. In exchange for just a small fee, people will have access to many charming gardens and an array of playgrounds there, which are also suitable for the younger visitors. Another amazing park in Hamm which all the outdoor lovers will appreciate is the local Kurpark. With all the flowers there it somewhat reminds of a beautiful botanical garden. The most amazing time for visiting Kurpark is during the summer when every Sunday there is a different concert performed at the music pavilion there.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN HAMM
The city of Hamm has a strong local economy which is mainly focused on the chemical, steel, as well as car manufacturing industry. Companies such as DuPont, also known as DuPont de Nemours, Inc (operating in the chemical industry), and Hella KGaA Hueck & Co (internationally operating German automotive car suppliers company) are among the top employers in the area and many recent graduates and skilled workers find career opportunities there. Moreover, students can find interesting internship positions at those companies and gain some important work experience while still at university.
