Iserlohn is the largest town in the Märkischer Kreis district in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Western Germany. It has earned the nickname “Waldstadt” (forest city) because of its vastly forested areas. Iserlohn is famous for its ice hockey team, the Iserlohn Roosters, the Dechenhöhle cave and the beer of the Waldstadtbrauerei (breweries) Iserlohn. Iserlohn has a population of 93,000 people, which makes it a large district town. The official language is German. Its climate can be described as temperate. The average annual temperature is 8.9 °C, which is slightly above the average annual temperature in the country. There can be significant amounts of rainfall. The federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia is extremely communicative and economically developed. Iserlohn is situated 30 km southeast of Dortmund, and is also in close range of larger cities like Cologne, Essen, Düsseldorf, and Wuppertal. The town of Iserlohn is easily accessible by rail and road. Several motorways, federal highways and country roads run through the city. Six railway stations operate on a daily basis, and trains follow a strict schedule. The nearest airport is in Dortmund. In addition, buses run within the city for maximum convenience. The town of Iserlohn has a history that can be traced back to 1000 years ago. A fascinating fact is that for decades it was the largest city in Westphalia due to an economic boom in the 18th and 19th century. For years, the main industry has been metal processing, but chemical and medical production and services are catching up as leading economic sectors.

STUDYING IN ISERLOHN

Iserlohn is the seat of two universities – University of Applied Sciences South Westphalia, and Business and Information Technology School. The University of Applied Sciences South Westphalia is a public university founded in 2002. It is headquartered in Iserlohn, but it also has branches in Hagen, Lüdenscheid, Meschede, and Soest. It is one of the biggest universities of applied sciences in Germany, with its student count exceeding 12,500. Altogether, the University of Applied Sciences South Westphalia offers approximately 50 Bachelor and Master degree programs, such as Mechatronics, Automation, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, International Management, Medical Technology, Product Development/Construction, and others. The seat in Iserlohn is split into two departments – the Department of Computer Science and Natural Sciences, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Most courses are taught in German, but the degree courses Business Administration with Informatics (BA), International Management & Information Systems (MA), and Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (M.Sc.) are offered entirely in English. The Business and Information Technology School, founded in 2000, is a private university approved by the state. The seat of the university is in Iserlohn, but there are two other branches in Berlin and Hamburg. The university is organized into two subject concentrations: “Business & Psychology”, and “Sport, Media & Event”. Students can choose from a total of eleven Bachelor and six Master degree programs, including Business Administration, Communication and Media Management, Psychology, Business Psychology, Financial Management, and more. Three Bachelor and three Master courses are offered in English. Accommodation in Iserlohn is not difficult to find. The organization Studierendenwerk Dortmund provides two student residences with over 60 available apartments. Monthly rent costs range between 201 and 251 EUR. Students of the Business and Information Technology School have the opportunity to live on campus, where a dormitory with approximately 80 apartments is available. In addition, private renting options are also easy to find, as local newspapers publish apartment listings weekly.

ISERLOHN LIFESTYLE

Iserlohn is a town of rich cultural life. One of the most significant attractions is the Park Theater which hosts various plays and shows. There are several museums in Iserlohn, as well as art galleries, music clubs, and concert halls. Ice hockey is the biggest sport in town, with the Iserlohn Roosters playing in the first German league. Other popular sports include basketball, volleyball, roller hockey, bowling, football, archery, and swimming. There are also several carnivals, fairs, festivals and other events held in Iserlohn annually. Students can enjoy a great nightlife in Iserlohn. There are a few bars and nightclubs – El Ambiente, Café Del Sol Iserlohn, Miami Shisha Bar, LION, and B7 Studentenclub, among others. The restaurants in town serve local cuisine as well as dishes from all around the world. The most famous product of the city is the local beer brewed in the private brewery of Iserlohn. Nature lovers will not be bored in Iserlohn, either. The Seilersee reservoir is a great place for relaxation, among the city forest, nature trails, parks and hiking pathways. The Dechenhöhle cave is one of the most famous tourist attractions, not only in Iserlohn, but in the whole region.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN ISERLOHN

Since the Middle Ages, Iserlohn has been a center for metal processing and production. Today, iron and metal production is still among the main industries in town. There are predominantly medium-sized companies which function as major automotive suppliers. Other strong economical sectors in town include office supply manufacturing and distribution, textile design, pharmaceutical manufacturing, waste management, and beer brewing. The federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia prides itself on a strong economy and some of the lowest unemployment rates in Germany. Some of the biggest companies in the country have their headquarters in the state, including E.ON (utilities), Metro (retail), Deutsche Telekom (telecommunications), Deutsche Post AG (logistics and transport), and Bayer AG (pharmaceuticals and chemicals).
