STUDYING IN KARLSRUHE

In total, there are eleven higher education institutions located in Karlsruhe, including one of the biggest research institutions in Germany – the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Moreover, the university is among the best higher education institutions in Europe for engineering. It offers plenty of choices to students when it comes to degree courses, including Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Civil Engineering and many others. Currently, the university is home to over 25,000 students and many of them are coming from around the globe. Even though the main language of instruction at the university is German, part of the courses is also offered in English as the main language and this is the main reason why every year, the amount of foreign and exchange students at the university is increasing. More than ten percent of Karlsruhe’s 300,000 inhabitants are students from the universities within the city. Therefore, finding a cheap and at the same time comfortable student accommodation close to the campuses, will be a difficult task. In fact, the most preferred option for student accommodation is living in student halls of residence, also called student dormitories. They do offer lower prices, they usually are close to the campuses (ten to twenty minutes by bike or even less with the public transport) and on top, they are the places where the best parties start! In Karlsruhe, renting for a room in a student dormitory comes at the price between 225 and 315 EUR per month including the bills. Students need to keep in mind that in Germany in general, not every student is guaranteed a room in the dormitories, therefore they are advised to apply as early as possible to have better chances to get a place. Fortunately, there are also other options like renting a room in a shared apartment with other students or renting a studio flat. The prices for private accommodation will be higher – between 260 and 350 EUR per person per month.
