Koblenz is a German city situated on the Rhine River and it is the third-biggest city in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In its total area of 105 km2, there are over 113,000 people living, working and studying there. In fact, approximately ten percent of the city’s inhabitants are foreigners from all around the world, but mainly from Austria, Croatia and Greece. The official language spoken in the city of Koblenz is German, of course. The climate in the city of Koblenz is oceanic with relatively cold winters and warm summers. Usually, during December and January temperatures in the city are around -1 to 3°C. The warmest months are July and August when temperatures go up to 24-26°C. Germany has a reputation of having excellent and reliable public transportation network and Koblenz is not an exception. Buses connect each and every part of the city, as well as the suburban area. Trains, however, are considered the most common way of transportation. The city is connected directly to the neighboring cities, including Bonn, Mainz, and Cologne via railway. STUDYING IN KOBLENZ
Even though it is a small city, Koblenz can offer a high level of higher education to students. The higher education institutions based in the city are relatively small, but at the same time, they are really modern and cozy. In fact, smaller universities provide students with the opportunity to talk to all the professors teaching there informally and keep a closer relationship. The atmosphere is very personal. Founded in 1999, the University of Koblenz and Landau, as its name suggests, has two campuses – in Koblenz and in Landau. The campus in Koblenz is home to over 9,000 students, both domestic and foreign ones, coming from around the world. In fact, approximately eighteen percent of the students enrolled at the Koblenz campus are internationals, both full-time students and exchange ones. The university offers a wide spectrum of degree courses, including Computer Science, Social Sciences, Education, Psychology and many more. Even though the main language of instruction at the university is German, numerous degree courses are also offered in English. Apart from choosing the right university and degree course, student accommodation is also a delicate topic for every prospective student. Sometimes, it can be hard to find the balance between quality and price. The most common type of student accommodation students in Koblenz prefer is the student hall of residence, also called student dormitory. Moreover, it is considered the cheapest option which is important, especially for those students who are looking for a place to fit their budget. Usually, a room at a student dormitory in Koblenz comes at the price of 190 to 250 EUR per month. However, getting a room in a student hall of residence is not guaranteed and students need to make sure they apply as early as possible in order for them to be assigned a room. Fortunately, even if some students do not get a room in the dormitory, they can still rent a room in a shared flat. The rent for a single room in an apartment amounts between 220 and 350 EUR in Koblenz, but it still depends on the flat’s location – the closer it is to the city center, the higher the price will be.

Koblenz is a relatively small but cozy city. However, one of the main advantages of living in a small city is that prices for rent and living expenses are generally lower compared to bigger cities, such as Berlin or Munich for example. Eating out is not that expensive and students can find interesting places to try delicious food. In fact, the variety of restaurants in Koblenz is large. From local cuisine to international and exotic meals, Koblenz has places that can satisfy even the most luxurious tastes. Moreover, the city can offer students exciting nightlife. There is always some kind of occasion to go out in Koblenz. Among the most famous clubs in the city that both local people and foreigners enjoy are Schiffchen, the Geckolounge, as well as Enchilada. Also, it is very common for new students to take pub tours during their first week in the city of Koblenz to explore some of the best and hidden places in the town.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN KOBLENZ
Due to its location between the Cologne and the Rhine, the local economy the city of Koblenz is mainly focused on the logistics services. Many students can find employment in local companies in the logistics sector after graduating from university. However, the majority of the graduates look for job opportunities in the bigger neighboring cities such as Mainz and Frankfurt. Since Mainz is located less than an hour by train from Koblenz, many graduates prefer to travel every day back and forth to Mainz and still live in Koblenz. That way, they benefit from both lower rent prices in Koblenz and higher salaries in Mainz.
