MANNHEIM AT A GLANCE

The third-largest city in the Baden-Wuerttemberg state is Mannheim, which is known for its unusual and unique street layout, beautiful baroque architecture and green nature. The city of squares or Mannheim², as it is often referred to by locals, has 144 squares neatly arranged in a U shape forming the city center. The grid pattern of the streets was designed probably at the beginning of the 17th century for the sole purpose of fulfilling all military requirements. Nowadays in the middle of the complex pattern lies the largest Baroque Palace in Germany, part of which houses the University of Mannheim. What makes this city ideal for students is the extraordinary blend of modern and innovative lifestyle with the history and traditions established centuries ago. The city lies in the Upper Rhine Plain, which also happens to be the warmest region in the country. Summers here are very warm and humid compared to other cities in Germany and can sometimes experience heat waves causing high temperatures rising up to 35 ᵒC. Winters in Mannheim are cold; however, the average temperature stays between 2 ᵒC and 3 ᵒC and snow can be barely seen here. It is very easy to get around the city as there are several means of public transportation one can benefit from and travel to all districts of Mannheim.
