Meissen is a small German city in the Free State of Saxony. It has a total area that equals 30.90 km2, with about 30,000 people living, working or studying in the city. The official language in the city of Meissen is German. The climate in the city can be defined as mostly warm and temperate, with significant rainfall during the whole year. The summer in Meissen is nice and warm but winter is relatively cold. Temperatures in December, January, and February are between -2 and 3 °C, while in July and August, they go up to 22 to 23 °C. Since the city of Meissen is not big, it is really easy to reach everything by foot. Even so, the city has a very good and reliable public transportation network. Inhabitants can use several buses in order to reach every part of the city, including the suburban areas. From the main train station located in the city center, people can reach and explore different cities within Germany. In fact, the fastest and easiest way to travel in the country is by train. Dresden, for example, is located less than thirty kilometers away from Meissen and is the ideal destination for just a day trip during Saturday or Sunday. It takes not more than half an hour to go Dresden from Meissen and students should be very curious to visit the so-called “Florence of the North”. Moreover, an hour and a half away by train is the amazing Leipzig, and this city is definitely a must as well.

STUDYING IN MEISSEN

The city of Meissen has a lot to offer to the people living there, including a very good level of higher education. The local University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration and Administration of Justice Meissen, also known as Hochschule für öffentliche Verwaltung und Rechtspflege, was founded in 1992 and currently is home to approximately 500 students. The higher education institution offers degree courses such as General Administration, Public Governance, Social Administration and others. The main language of instruction is German, therefore prospective students need to prove sufficient knowledge in the German language when applying to the university. Deciding on where to study and what is the degree course that fits best is very important for every prospective student. Of course, that is not everything. Student accommodation is the next aspect that needs to be considered. In the city of Meissen, students can rent rooms in shared apartments where kitchen and bathroom are shared with other students. In Meissen, students can expect to pay between 190 and 250 EUR per month for a room in a shared flat. Those students who prefer to have their privacy and do not want to share anything with other people can look for one-bedroom apartments or studios. They, however, cost more – approximately 350 to 490 EUR per month with all the bills included.

Situated on both banks of the Elbe river, the city of Meissen is small but really cozy and beautiful. Meissen is really green town and a great number of buildings are historical, which give it a special type of charm. The Meissen Cathedral situated in the city center is really impressive. In fact, the cathedral is really famous spot among all the tourists coming to Meissen for a visit. However, the most famous thing Meissen is associated with is the Meissen porcelain, and the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory is a must place to visit in the city. There, visitors can enjoy the demonstration workshop, where an audio guide is provided and the whole assembling process is explained in detail. Meissen has a winemaking tradition reaching back to the 12th century. Only fifteen kilometers north of the city of Meissen is the Saxony wine region with many beautiful vineyards. There are wine tastings organized during the whole year, with many people escaping their everyday routine by trying some of the best Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN MEISSEN

Meissen can offer an excellent level of higher education to students. However, after graduation, most of them prefer to move to bigger cities, such as Dresden or Leipzig for example. Bigger cities can offer much more opportunities for young and ambitious graduates in terms of career development and success. Students can start traineeship or directly get a full-time job in an international company where they can build their career from scratch. In fact, since Dresden is located only half an hour away by train from Meissen, many graduates have job positions in Dresden and they still continue living in Meissen and travel back and forth every day. That way, they save some money from rent and still enjoy the benefits of a big city.
