Just a few kilometers north from the capital of Germany lies the city of Oranienburg with a population of nearly 45,000 people. With its location on the Oberhavel and a history of almost 800 years, the city attracts over 1.9 million visitors every year. As mentioned previously, Berlin is located only about 35 kilometers away, which gives citizens the opportunity to travel frequently to the capital where even more working and leisure offers can be found. Oranienburg has a rather oceanic climate similar to the one in Berlin with an average annual temperature of about 8.9 °C. Summers are warm and sunny with temperatures reaching up an average maximum of 24 °C to 25 °C. Winters, on the other hand, are cooler, with January being the coldest month. Similar to other medium-sized cities across Germany, Oranienburg is optimally accessible through many routes via road, railway and even water. Getting around within the city can be done on foot, by cycling or by using the public transport comprised of buses. Operating regularly throughout Oranienburg’s districts, the city buses provide easy access to all travelers every day. The official and most spoken language here is German, however there are many people living here with foreign backgrounds. Thanks to the different multicultural societies established in Oranienburg, newcomers should find it easy to adapt regardless of the language barrier.

STUDYING IN ORANIENBURG

Oranienburg is home to the Brandenburg State Police Academy and College (Hochschule der Polizei des Landes Brandenburg, HPol) established in 1998. The College is accredited as a university of applied sciences with the task of educating and training its students for the police services in the entire state. Currently, more than 1,000 students apply every year to study subjects at either Bachelor’s or Master’s level, including “Criminal Law”, “Criminalistics”, “Applied Psychology”, “Intervention Law” and others. The College offers a modern campus with a library, spacious lecture theatres, shooting range, sports fields and halls that all students can benefit from. International students coming from other countries will need to organize their accommodation prior to their arrival or once they have arrived in Oranienburg. The College does not offer any student residence halls, however there are multiple opportunities for students to find rooms in shared flats or individuals studio apartments on the private housing market of the city. The price range varies depending on the type and location of the accommodation. In Germany most of the places for rent usually come unfurnished, so individuals will have to think of that as well.

Living and studying in Oranienburg can be described as wonderful due to the impressive range of cultural and leisure activities, entertainment events, recreational opportunities and great quality of life. Students will find an extensive calendar of events ranging from theatrical or dance performances to open-air concerts and intercultural weeks. The surrounding region with its beautiful green landscapes and wooded areas is perfect for spending a day or two exploring the nature by hiking or climbing. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN ORANIENBURG

Graduates from the Brandenburg State Police Academy and College are trained to become qualified professionals in the police service area within the Brandenburg state. As such they can occupy different positions and become police officers, criminal investigators and lieutenants, among other things. Throughout their studies, all students will have the opportunity to participate in exchange programs thanks to the cooperation of the College with other international police institutes. This will allow students to improve their skills and understand in depth the duties of the police service.
