Rothenburg/Oberlausitz is a small town in the valley of the Lusatian Neisse river in the federal state of Saxony, northeastern Germany. It is situated in the district of Görlitz which is the easternmost city in Germany. Accordingly, Rothenburg/Oberlausitz is considered the easternmost small town in Germany. The climate in Rothenburg/Oberlausitz is fairly cold, with an average yearly high of 13 °C, and there is a significant amount of rainfall. The summer months are sunny and beautiful. The town has a population of roughly 4,500 people, and is home to the University of Applied Sciences for Police of the Free State of Saxony. The official language is German, but it is not strange to hear Polish as well, as the town is located on the border between the two countries. Rothenburg/Oberlausitz is in one of the most forested and agricultural regions in Germany. The town is connected to the region and nearby cities of Görlitz, Bautzen and Bad Muskau by motorway and railway, and is easily accessible by train and bus. The best way to get around in Rothenburg/Oberlausitz is by bike. The town was first established in the Middle Ages and has since welcomed visitors and tourists with its wooded landscape and beautiful nature. Rothenburg/Oberlausitz has a history of crafts and agriculture as the most developed economic sectors have been preserved despite wars and a total of 13 devastating fires. STUDYING IN ROTHENBURG/OBERLAUSITZ

Founded in 1994, the Hochschule der Sächsischen Polizei, or the University of Saxon Police (FH), is a technical college located in Rothenburg/Oberlausitz that is focused on fully preparing students for the senior police service. There are currently around 450 students enrolled who are pursuing a degree and getting the necessary qualifications for a job in the police services. The University of Saxon Police is split into two departments: the Department of Police Management, and the Department of Law, Social Sciences, Languages. Students in the University of Saxon Police are offered a Bachelor’s degree in Upper Intermediate Police Service and a Master’s in Public Administration – Police Management, both taught in German, but all students are obligated to enroll in English classes. Another important part of the courses at The University of Saxon Police is practical training. Students are usually given the opportunity to do internships at local public authorities. The requirements that candidates at the University of Saxon Police are required to meet include the general or subject-specific Abitur, physical and health aptitude tests, maximum age of 31 years, and the existence of the multi-component selection process. Because Rothenburg/Oberlausitz is a small town, student accommodation can be very hard to find. There are residential homes located in the town with prices ranging from 170 to 450 EUR per month. Another option are student residences in the city of Görlitz where more spots are available.

The town of Rothenburg/Oberlausitz may be small, but it has some interesting sights, such as the Protestant city church and the Catholic Church of St. Maria Regina Rosarii, memorials and monuments for the fallen in World War II, and a medieval town center with charming buildings. Tourists and locals alike can enjoy the beautiful nature in the city park, cycle along the Neisse river or go on a boat tour, visit the aeronautical museum and go on a sightseeing flight, or just have a great time at the sports complex in the town. Because of the town’s convenient location, you can go on a day trip to Poland as well. Regular events are held in Rothenburg/Oberlausitz every year, like the Rothenburger Sommerfest, which is a big folk festival, the Neisse Adventure Race – a sports competition –, and an annual traditional Christmas market. There are a few delightful cafes and restaurants in the town center in Rothenburg/Oberlausitz that cater to all tastes. There may not be many possibilities regarding nightlife in Rothenburg/Oberlausitz, but the nearby city of Görlitz has a variety of bars, clubs and pubs, some of the most popular of which include Nightlife Pur, First Club Görlitz, La Habana Bar, Kings Pub and more.
