Schmalkalden is a city in the southwest of the federal state of Thuringia, Central Germany. It is situated in the southwestern slope of the Thuringian Forest and at the Schmalkalde river which is a tributary to the Werra river. Schmalkalden today is primarily a university town. It is famous for its medieval half-timbered houses, 90 % of which have been preserved through the centuries. Today they bring in visitors who admire the charm of this historical town. The city has a long history, being first mentioned in a deed from 874. Schmalkalden was once at the center of European politics. It has withstood many events, including heavy bomb damage during World War II, but was later restored to its current state. Schmalkalden is a town of roughly 19,000 people. The official language is German, but the interesting local dialect can still be heard in parts of the city. The average annual temperature in Schmalkalden is 7.8 °C, which makes its climate fairly cold to moderate. Schmalkalden is located 70 km southwest of Erfurt – the capital of the state of Thuringia. Two federal highways run through the Schmalkalden city area – 19 and 71 –, which makes Schmalkalden easily accessible and well-connected. The town can also be reached by train. Within Schmalkalden, buses run daily, but the most convenient way to get around is by bike.

STUDYING IN SCHMALKALDEN

Founded in 1991, Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences is a public university that currently accommodates almost 3,000 students. The university is split into five faculties – Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Computer Science, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Business Law, which offer a total of 31 degree programs. Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences provides Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as dual study programs and extra-occupational certificate studies that are very practice-oriented and aim to provide a combination of lectures and professional experience which help the students gain valuable industry skills. Students at Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences can choose between a number of degree programs, including Computer Science, Business Administration, Economics, Mechanical Engineering, Business Law, Mechatronics and Robotics, Corporate Management, and many more. Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences welcomes international students. There is a number of courses taught in English, such as Automotive Drive Systems, Laser Technology and Production Technology, to name a few. In addition, first-year international students are provided with preparatory German courses prior to starting their studies. The university is also a certified TestDaF examination center, where students can complete the test and obtain the certificate. Because Schmalkalden is a university town, finding accommodation is not a tough challenge. First-year students are guaranteed accommodation near the campus and monthly rent starts from 155 EUR. The Studierendenwerk Thüringen organization provides rooms on the university campus, and there is also an additional student complex eight minutes away. Monthly rent ranges between 155 and 218 EUR. Private renting options are naturally also available.

SCHMALKALDEN LIFESTYLE

Schmalkalden is a charming university town that provides plenty of opportunities for a good time. Apart from the welcoming medieval half-timbered houses some of which have now been turned into museums, there many other historic buildings that are worth seeing. The City Church of St. George, Castle Wilhelmsburg, and the former Marstall stable are just a few examples of buildings that have been preserved through the centuries. There is a variety of restaurants catering to every taste in Schmalkalden. The nightlife is also exciting, with the most popular bars and clubs in town being Studentenclub Schmalkalden (a nightclub especially for students), Clubhaus, WunderBar, Miami Nights, Monokel Irish Pub, and many others. Moreover, different events are regularly organized in Schmalkalden. The Schmalkalder Hirschessen city festival takes place every August; summer movie nights are often held; in December there is a traditional Christmas market; and there are concerts, music festivals, food markets, festivals, and dance events throughout the year. The nature in and surrounding Schmalkalden is perfect for hikes in the nearby mountains, biking and walks in nature. In the town of Schmalkalden there is an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, a few different parks and gardens, and the Werra River which is beautiful to take walks along.
