In the state of Thuringia, right between Erfurt and Jena, lies the quaint university town of Weimar. The climate in the city is rather continental and quite humid at times. In summer, the days are warm and sunny with average high temperatures of around 23 °C. Winters, on the other hand, are relatively cold with temperatures dropping below 0 °C. Due to the topography of the city, rainfall and snowfall are somewhat moderate and do not last for too long. In terms of transportation, Weimar is very well connected with its neighboring cities and other regions in Germany. Traveling within the city is also very easy as the city is quite small and most of the places are located within walking distance and can be easily reached with a bike. However, the local public transport actively functions with city buses servicing all districts. Students can benefit from their semester tickets and travel free of charge or for a small fee within the city and outside of it to cities like Fulda, Erfurt, Jena, or even Frankfurt.

STUDYING IN WEIMAR

One of the most influential institutions of architecture, art and design of the 20th century can be found exactly here in Weimar. The Bauhaus, established in 1860, still follows its long-established traditions by providing exceptional education to all of its students. The university offers about 40 degree programs covering a very wide spectrum of disciplines, including Materials Science, Processing Technology, Architecture, Civil Engineering, and more. Over 4,000 students have enrolled over the past years in order to receive professional education combined with modern approaches and innovative teaching techniques. The university has also a very active research profile with a very international and interdisciplinary focus. Residence halls here offer furnished single rooms that are usually in a shared flat with communal kitchens and bathrooms. The price range for such rooms varies between 115 and 318 EUR depending on the type of the accommodation. Alternatively, many students also choose to live in shared flats offered on the private housing market.

WEIMAR LIFESTYLE

Lifestyle here in general is quite diverse, allowing students to be quite active even during their leisure time. Although all sorts of cultural events take place throughout the whole year, Weimar is extremely lively in the summer. The nice weather, colorful landscapes and big events encourage young adults to spend more time outside with their friends and seek never-ending entertainment. With the river Ilm passing through the city, many people like to hang out along its shores in the Park an der Ilm during the hot days. In addition, the surrounding nature offers a great variety of outdoor activities students can engage with in their leisure time. Within the city there are several swimming pools (both indoor and outdoor), fitness facilities and multiple sport clubs where everyone can join and practice everything from football and tennis to martial arts and yoga. One of the most essentials things about the student life besides learning is probably entertainment. Parties and dance evenings are regularly hosted at the local bars and clubs where young people often meet up with their friends. For those who prefer to spend their evenings rather quietly, Weimar also offers other venues like the four cinema theatres showing the latest blockbusters, thematic movies or movies in their original-languages so that expats can enjoy the art of cinema as well. Travel enthusiasts can easily explore the surrounding region and spend a day or two in one of the closest cities like Erfurt and Jena, or take a week to discover bigger cities like Frankfurt, Dresden, and Leipzig.
