Worms is among the oldest German cities, located in the southwestern part of the country. Based on the west bank of the Rhine river, Worms is about sixty kilometers away from Mainz and seventy from Frankfurt am Main. The city of Worms is a small but cozy and beautiful town with a total area of 108.73 km2 and about 80,000 people living, studying and working there. Approximately seven percent of the city’s total population is foreigners, mostly coming from Austria, Croatia, and Greece. The official language in the city of Worms is German, just like in the rest of the country. The climate in Worms is considered temperate. In winter, temperatures are around 3 and 0°C and summer in the city is really enjoyable and warm, with temperatures around 22-24°C. All parts of the city of Worms, as well as its suburban areas, are connected through buses. Moreover, both trains and buses connect the city of Worms with other cities in Germany, as well as with some neighboring countries, such as Belgium, France, as well as Austria and Luxembourg. For example, there are buses leaving almost every day from the Worms main bus station to Brussels, Belgium, in exchange for approximately 30 EUR one way. The closest airport located near Worms is the Mannheim-City Airport, only twenty kilometers away from the city of Worms and about forty from Frankfurt am Main Airport.

STUDYING IN WORMS

Even though Worms is not a big city, University of Applied Sciences – Worms located there does offer a high quality of education to students in many different fields. Study courses in areas such as computer science, tourism, business management, and many others are available to students who choose to study at the University of Applied Sciences in Worms. All the faculties in the higher education institution provide a strong basis for application-oriented research. Courses are usually taught in German as a main language of instruction. However, there are also courses provided in the English language. The university in Worms is home to more than 13,000 students, both domestic and foreign ones. The higher education institution has many partnerships with well-known universities around the world and every year there are hundreds of exchange students coming to Worms to taste the University of Applied Sciences and the student life that the city of Worms has to offer them. When it comes to student accommodation in Worms, all prospective students need to be aware that they have to choose between living in a student dormitory, also called student hall of residence, or in private accommodation. For foreign students, the International Office from the university provides assistance in finding the right accommodation. The most common choice of accommodation type among students is living in the dormitories. However, just like any other public university in the Federal Republic, the University of Applied Sciences in Worms cannot guarantee a room in a student hall of residence to all students. The accommodation service operates on the first-come-first-serve-basis which means that the sooner students apply, the higher the chances are for them to be assigned a room. The typical monthly price for a room in a student hall of residence is between 240 and 300 EUR per month (all bills included). Of course, there is also an option for students to find and rent a room in a shared flat themselves. There, however, prices are higher and range between 250 and 400 EUR per month per person.

Besides being one of the oldest cities in the Federal Republic, Worms is associated with the famous and unique St. Peter’s Cathedral. In fact, the cathedral dates back from the 12th century and is one of the three existing Romanic imperial cathedrals. The St. Peter’s Cathedral is annually bringing thousands of visitors to the city of Worms. Worms is also known as the “City of Luther” (after Martin Luther), and is famous for its central role in the heroic Nibelung saga. There are four impressive museums based in the city of Worms, including the Jewish Museum which is maybe the second most popular tourist spot in the town. The museum aims at introducing to visitors the city’s storied Jewish community through different exhibits. Between studying and working, if the weather allows it, students may spend some quality free time with friends or alone at the Strandbar on the Rhine promenade.
