The four-semester degree program “Master of Arts in Costume Design” at the Berlin University of the Arts is one of a few of this kind in Europe for the interdisciplinary focus it puts on costume conception, design, creation and use in expressive arts. Current trends in contemporary theatre require the use of new skills, methods and outlooks on costume production. The comprehensive qualifications guarantee the professional practice as a costume designer in theatre, performance, film and television. Emphasis on creativity, research, artistic independence and experimentation is placed throughout the study modules, and the efficient implication of technology supports the necessary competences. The Master program takes the form of design projects, which have different thematic topics each year. The postgraduate studies bring to a conclusion the aesthetic mastery obtained in the bachelor’s course, which is a qualifying prerequisite for this program.
