Those students who wish to become school teachers of Arts at elementary schools in Germany, will need to have a completed Master’s degree, since only it gives access to the preparatory service (Referendariat) and to the teaching profession. Primary School Teacher Training in Fine Arts at the Berlin University of Arts offers a four-semester program, which leads to the obtainment of a Master of Education title. It goes for four semesters and the entrance requirements intend for the candidates to prove their superior artistic mastery, corresponding to the degree level. This is judged by the evaluation of the artistic portfolio exacted at applying for the degree. The portfolio should contain 15 to 20 own works, whose thematic areas reflect the interests, originality and depth of the candidate.
