The Berlin University of Arts bachelor’s degree “Bachelor of Arts in Stage Design” continues for six semesters and is held in German. It prepares set designers for the theatre stage. It is also related to other visual settings like film, video and media, or performance and installation, so a broad range of areas of knowledge are involved in the process: architecture, philosophy, culture, literature, sociology, even technical notions of set building. Another crucial aspect is the cooperation with the rest of the team in a theatre production. The studies are project-oriented, which gives hands-on experience for future individual designs. Applicants should present a portfolio of 20 works of their own, which also include sculpture. The merit of these is weighed against not only artistic, but also against analytical skill, since a stage designer should be able to transfer to the objects and characters the overall message of the stage piece it would serve. Individual and group lessons, lectures and seminars form up the artistic and technical modules included in the program.
