Description

Emergency paramedics carry out medical first aid measures or assist in the medical emergency and acute care of patients. This means that they are entrusted with limited medical services. Increasingly, the ambulance service is also entering the borderline area between general practitioner and inpatient care. In order to do justice to this responsibility and the increasingly complex tasks of an emergency paramedic, a course of study based on training in this field offers the necessary supplement. In addition to practical competence, sound theoretical knowledge is particularly necessary in order to be able to assess the consequences of decisions and actions.

The Bachelor's degree programme "Emergency Paramedic" at Dresden International University (DIU) closes this gap. The study programme expands the skills and abilities acquired in the vocational training with health science, business administration, pedagogical, psychological as well as medical contents. This enables an interdisciplinary, scientifically reflected exchange with all those involved in emergency situations and efficient patient care.

Structure of the programme

The programme is structured in modules. On the one hand, the modules teach the basics (e.g. basic sciences, methodological competence), and on the other hand, subject-specific content (e.g. related sciences, subject-specific topics). The study programme enables the student to implement current scientific findings as a reflective practitioner. Furthermore, students gain insight into the structure and function of the health care system and the emergency medical services. They learn how the health care system, inpatient and outpatient clinics and facilities, as well as the providers of emergency care are organised and how cost units work. In addition, they learn about the legal framework for working in the health care system.

Social skills are also part of mastering the work tasks of an emergency paramedic. The students are prepared to optimise their time and self-management as well as to lead personnel themselves. They deepen their communication skills and practise leading patient/client and staff discussions. In addition, they learn how to resolve conflicts.
