Description
The English-language study program “Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering” at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne is geared towards individuals who hold a Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Life Sciences or related areas. Students become acquainted with materials synthesis and processing, materials microstructure and materials properties of polymers, ceramics, metals and alloys, and composites. They are further taught how to use their knowledge to improve the performance of engineered products and design materials for new technological applications. Emphasis is put on sustainable development. Students are explained in detail the relationship between microstructure and the structural and functional properties of materials. They explore the atomic structure and are provided with training for application of advanced materials in fields such as bio and nanotechnology. Graduates have a broad range of job opportunities. For instance, they might pursue a career in different industries, performing activities ranging from the production of materials to the manufacturing of finished products such as watches, sports equipment, aeronautics, foods, or automobiles.
