The program “Bachelor of Arts in Assyriology” at Heidelberg University is a major course of study (75%) with a continuation of six semesters. The program concentrates on the Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian and Hittite cultures in all their cultural, social and political aspects. Students acquire their theoretical knowledge from books, but primarily from clay tablets surviving in the modern world, inscribed with cuneiform writing. They study the fundamentals of the cuneiform system, the central ancient Eastern languages, and an overview of the history and culture and history of the Ancient Near East. Graduates have a strong background in Sumerian and Akkadian, the two major languages of the Ancient Near East, and basic knowledge of Hittite.
