The consecutive program “Master of Arts in German as a Foreign Language/German as a Second Language” at Heidelberg University is four semesters long. The course of studies concentrates on diagnostic and didactic issues related to the acquisition and use of German as a foreign language or German as a second language by children and young people in pre-school and school education. In addition, the program can be studied as a major or minor subject. Students gain competencies in the areas of psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and theories of language acquisition. Finally, the course ends with writing and defending a master’s degree and with an oral examination.
