The study course “Bachelor of Arts in South Asian Studies” at Heidelberg University educates students on the geographical, social and economic aspects of South Asian culture alongside historical and philological aspects. The essential element of the program is to introduce students from the outset to multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary ways of working. The major-75% is six semesters long and is taught in German, English, and some possible South Asian languages. The curriculum incorporates the topic areas such as Religion and Ritual, Oral traditions, Culture and Politics, The Problem of Ethnic Identity, Cultural Performance and South Asian Diaspora. Students develop critical and analytical skills, learn at least one spoken language in South Asia and other beneficial competencies.
