Founded in 1950, the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin is a state music academy in Berlin named after the music theorist and composer Hanns Eisler. After the death of Eisler, who was one of the first professors at the university, the institution was renamed in his honor in 1964. Today, the university has around 600 students from 54 countries and, since an extensive renovation in 2005, has been located at two sites: at the famous Gendarmenmarkt and in the Neue Marstall in Berlin. Approximately 600 students from 54 countries are enrolled there. The scope of studies spans the areas of singing and direction, strings, woodwind and brass instruments, as well as musicology and composition. The study programs with an exclusively artistic focus comprise 24 Bachelor programs, 28 Master programs, 19 Konzertexamen further studies programs, as well as five Masterclass further studies programs (“Composition, Historical and Contemporary Compositional Technique“, “Choir Conducting“, “Orchestra Conducting“, “Music Theatre Direction“). In addition to the regular course offerings, the Hanns Eisler College of Music, in collaboration with Deutscher Chorverband, provides the opportunity of taking part in a professional development program for choir conductors.
