Description

The study course “Bachelor of Arts in Classical Archaeology” is offered by the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz with a duration of six semesters. The core subject of the program is the material culture of the Greek and Roman world in antiquity. The time frame ranges from the early Greek, "Homeric" world to the classical and Hellenistic epochs as well as the Roman republic and imperial times to late antiquity, historically speaking to the establishment of Christianity and the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The focus on the geographical area primarily falls on the areas permanently settled by the Greeks and Romans, Greece and Italy along with the basis for the archaeological work in research and teaching in main material evidence, the extensive inventory of written sources such as historiography, poetry, inscriptions with the sub-areas of architecture, painting and sculpture in order to provide a broad cultural-historical discipline that addresses all aspects of the constitution of human living space in classical antiquity.
