Description
With a duration of six semesters the program “Bachelor of Arts in Ethnology” is offered by the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. The course focuses on non-European societies as well as on current and problem-related topics, such as the state in everyday life, current political conflicts, religious pluralism and development policy. In addition, the course is characterized by the preoccupation with languages and the products of cultural activity, primarily in Africa, such as literature, music, film and video. The aim of the course is to impart basic knowledge of the history and debates of the subject and basic questions of ethnology and the acquisition of competencies in the analysis of contemporary societies and their cultural dimensions from a comparative perspective. The course integrates questions, methods and explanatory approaches from ethnology, development sociology, African literary studies, media studies and cultural studies.
